you’re gonna want centos 7, not 8. 8 is ahead of the vfx reference platform till late next year.

SteadXP should work fine in a VM if not wine like I said.

CentOS is the only distribution that supports commercial software and it’s what industry houses use for the most part. Commercial software will never work by default on arch distributions because they release so far ahead of the linux VFX reference platform, whereas CentOS/RHEL is very close. No point in bothering with other distributions if you’re serious about production on a linux base.

Quote from part 1 of this article:

“There are 2 very good reasons that this is the only distribution I’m comfortable recommending for video production. Over the last year, I’ve tried many different distributions and iterations of Linux as a video workstation OS. During that time, essentially every other popular distro fell short on software support.

If you want to use commercial software for video production, which is a prerequisite for doing it professionally, you have to use CentOS. Ubuntu comes close on that front, but is unreliable elsewhere, and falls short on another important requirement: it’s not very close to the VFX Reference platform, meaning the already small pool of plugins for professional software on linux shrinks even more.”

While you can, in fact, run steadxp in a VM or with a compatibility layer, I’d suggest investing in a full-featured tracking suite like syntheyes or mocha — or better yet, mechanical stabilization that doesn’t crop into your video.

Thank you for those details ! I may need to change then to be fully in CentOS ! And instead of doing a VM, I can then dual boot may be And I love the way CentOS 8 arrive with the Gnome environnement. I check a little bit more about that, and I find the way to add flathub, that’s great actually !

SteadXP is cropping. But it’s actually a great feature, and you can’t compare it to mocha or syntheyes, it’s betwin the software and mechanical stabilization, but as reliable as a gimbal. I’m a glidecam guy, using it for most of my jobs. But sometimes, having steadxp solution allow you to deal with funky movement, impossible in little production without money (big rigs I mean) it’s a perfect stabilisation in post (no jitter and any weird frame stretch).

Thank you for all those precisions !

That’s a good tutorial… I saw that you took some info from Arch for the PCI passthgough post tho :p
I chosed Manjaro (based on Arch) for my video production, a month ago…
Long term hesitated with CentOS ! Why should I switch again for CentOS ? Do you think I could please myself better, or you really think it THE most reliable OS ?

Losing time to switch is really hard ^^’ ! My main problem now is to use one soft : SteadXP available only on windows and mac. Is it painless using CentOS for VM ?

I’m thinking of it because I noticed some problems via manjaro… I even though about Ubuntu Studio to get the realtime sound playback and capture.

Some advices ?
